28 Charged with Child Sex Trafficking in Nashville

January 20, 2012 – Twenty-eight persons were charged in federal court in Nashville in connection with child sex trafficking. Many are said to be gang members. They are charged with transporting pre-teens and teens between three states and forcing them to engage in commercial sex acts.

Two Indicted in Memphis for Trafficking Teens

A Memphis grand jury indicted two persons on charges of prostituting 15- and 16-year-old girls in Memphis and Texas, using drugs to control them. The alleged traffickers could face 15 years to life in prison.

GA Teen Charged in Nashville with Four Alleged Victims

Update: January 24, 2012 – One of the women who originally portrayed herself as a victim in this case is now indicted.  News report.

August 29, 2011 – Nashville police last Friday charged a Georgia teen with trafficking for sexual servitude among other counts. Police found two teens and two young women with the accused at a Nashville hotel. Police consider them victims. See video report.

Governor Haslam Signs Anti-Slavery Legislation

June 7, 2011 – Tennessee took three major steps forward this week toward creating a slave-free state with Governor Bill Haslam’s signing of three important laws.

The Tennessee Human Trafficking Resource Center Hotline Act establishes within the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) a state hotline for human trafficking victims and tipsters and mandates posting the hotline number in establishments within key industries.

Earlier this week, the Governor signed an asset forfeiture bill and a bill protecting minors from being charged with prostitution.

Major Statewide Trafficking Ring Bust

May 7, 2011 — Nine members of an alleged human trafficking ring were indicted for bringing Mexican women to Tennessee with the promise of jobs. Instead, they were allegedly forced into prostitution for years on a circuit that included Knoxville, Morristown, Johnson City, Goodlettsville, Jeffersontown and Newburg.

Feds: Human Trafficking Ring HQ in Columbia, TN

December 11, 2010 — Five men accused of involvement in a regional prostitution ring headquartered in Columbia, TN, face federal charges of human trafficking. Informants told investigators that they were forced into prostitution through fear and intimidation.

Romanian Trafficking Suspect Arrested in TN

December 6, 2010 — A Gordon County Sheriff's Deputy stopped a driver who turned out to be a fugitive in Romania on human trafficking charges. It is unclear what he was doing in Tennessee.

29 Indicted in Nashville-Connected Case

November 8, 2010 — Twenty-nine suspected Somali gang members indicted in a sex-trafficking ring that included Nashville and involved girls age 13 and younger.

August 23, 2010 — A West TN man was indicted on four counts of sex trafficking by force, fraud and coercion against two minors and two women.

Worker Claims "Atmosphere of Terror"

August 2010 — A Mexican national backed by a worker rights group accused a TN DOT contractor of exploiting green card holders and creating for workers an atmosphere of terror.

Memphis Man Gets 25 Years

June 24, 2010 — Memphis man who pled guilty to trafficking children for sex gets 25-year prison term.

Mother Claims Enslavement

January 2010 — The arrest of a Nashville area man in a prostitution sting uncovered an alleged case of forced sexual servitude involving a Nashville mother.

17-Year-Olds Trafficked

August 31, 2009 — Nashville detectives charged a Georgia man with sex trafficking of two 17-year-olds girls at Comfort Inn on Elm Hill Pike.

Nashville Family Charged

August 19, 2009 — A Nashville mother, son and daughter were charged with using a minor in sex trafficking. Federal agents are also investigating whether other minors were involved.

Note: There is actually no such thing as a child prostitute - only children who are prostituted. Children do not have the capacity to make such decisions, even if their actions appear voluntary.

June 10, 2009 — A father and son were arrested in Nashville and charged with trafficking women in sexual servitude after a 20-year-old woman asked employees at a Nashville motel to call police.

February 4, 2009 — Woman taken from Nashville, brought to Memphis for forced sex. Note: The article title calls this a prostitution ring, but the content indicates forced prostitution equals slavery/trafficking. Also, note that the woman is charged and treated as a criminal, not a victim.

First Prosecution under New Tennessee Law

November 18, 2008 — In the first case ever prosecuted under Tennessee's new anti-trafficking law, two men were sentenced to serve six months prison for forcing a woman, through torture, to serve three years as a prostitute.
